YouTube’s new channel to help get rid of poverty

October 3, 2008

YouTube has started a new channel that is initiated by Black Eyed Peas vocalist will.i.am and a bunch of other renowned celebrities. The channel aims at addressing crucial messages through videos and is targeted at world leaders. This comes as world leaders meet at the UN.

Back in the year 2000, at the United Nations Millennium Summit, our world leaders had agreed on freeing the world from poverty, disease, hunger, environmental degradation, illiteracy and discrimination against women. They set a deadline of September 2015 to meet the goals. The entire act (or meet) was termed as the Millennium Development Goals.

But they have failed to meet their promises and hence will.i.am and many celebrities joined hands to start a campaign. The campaign is supported by NGO’s like Oxfam, GCAP, Save the Children, Comic Relief, Engender Health, March of Dimes, 1Sky etc.

The new channel named In My Name on YouTube features a new song with its video and urges users to submit videos with their name, home country, and a message for their government. Users can send in videos by 1st November 2008. The best submissions will be broadcast at the United Nations General Assembly. Celebrities like John Legend, Scarlett Johansson, Kristin Davis and Elle Macpherson, to name a few, have joined hands for the initiative.
