The search engine giant, Google is now considering the possibility of streaming full length television programmes. Google will incorporate its popular video sharing website, YouTube for this particular purpose. This strategic move will however put an end to YouTube’s free content model. It will also put the well-known website on a par with BBC iPlayer, Channel 4 OD, ITV Player and Demand five.
Recent reports suggest that Google is currently in talks with TV broadcasters for this particular arrangement. According to Google, the negotiations have so far been positive excluding a few barriers. Google wants to stream all the content on YouTube rather than focusing solely on consumer downloads. Reports have also claimed that TV owners wish to acquire the same amount of money they receive from the services that offer multiple downloads.
Google’s new strategy will certainly place them head to head with the broadcaster’s own service. However, it will also see Big G clash with Apple, which provides Television content, downloads via the iTunes services and Apple TV. The deal might also affect Amazon, which offers TV show downloads consistently.
The video sharing website has also recently entered into an agreement with Channel 4. The website now contains thousands of hours of Channel 4’s content coupled with adverts. It is still uncertain as to how consumers will receive this particular pay for TV arrangement.
