The new mobile portal by AOL to comprise ‘unobtrusive’ adverts

AOL has just launched a new, innovative mobile web browser that it thinks will give users ‘the best possible realistic interpretation of a complete online experience’ on a mobile device.

The new mobile portal by AOL will comprise ‘unobtrusive’ adverts, according to the company. AOL’s head of European mobile, Chris Lock, has announced on eve of the web browser launch that it marks the start of a very important and active period for the company.

AOL though faces competition from many other technology biggies, especially Microsoft and Yahoo! among others.

The browser can be downloaded from the website wap.aol.com/uk. It can also be downloaded by sending out a simple text message ‘AOL’ to 85885. Once downloaded, the new web browser will serve as a user’s personalised portal. It will pull in a wide variety of content from various channels available on AOL’s main website.

The content will be pushed in a format that is customised for the small size screens of latest mobile devices. The portal will let users access their own AOL email account without any hassle and in quick time. The company’s search bar will also be integrated into the homepage of AOL portal.

AOL has stated that the new web browser for mobile phones can “transcode” websites on-the-fly, thus automatically tailoring content pages to be viewed on mobile handsets.

The new web browser will utilise tabbed navigation along with clear menu systems for simplifying the tedious process of scrolling around longish web pages. It will thus make it easier to connect to important links. According to figures available, each month over 6 million people presently access the UK website of AOL from their desktops or laptops.

The move is part of an organised attempt and strategy by AOL to reinvent and reposition itself as a broad based advertising & content company rather than just being identified as a pure Internet service provider.
