The Google Mail Goggles feature

October 11, 2008

Google has deftly adapted its free email service so as to help those letting loose after a busy day and a few evening cocktails from sending messages; something they might perhaps regret in the morning.

The Mail Goggles software springs to life after it gets dark and also on weekends, when a dizzy state of mind is more probable.

Sometimes I tend to send messages that I should not send.

Gmail engineer Jon Perlow wrote in a website posting that announced the optional new feature. He added:

Like the time I told that girl I had a crush on her over text message, or perhaps the time when I sent that late night email to my ex-girlfriend that we should get back together.

All Gmail users can activate the Goggles feature by adjusting their email settings so as to dictate the times it is active. Perlow explained:

It will check that you are sure that you want to send that late night Friday email. And what better way to check than by making one to solve a few very simple math problems after one click sends to verify you are in the right state of mind?

The Google Mail Goggles feature aims to prevent such moments by prompting you to answer simple math questions before the email is sent.
