Social networking grows in popularity

August 26, 2008

The most recent statistics from ComScore show that social networking websites like Facebook are growing quickly across the globe, even though the growth has slowed down in the US somewhat, where they all originated. According to the numbers published by ComScore, social networking sites may be nearing a peak in the US. The growth in US and Canada was a mere nine per cent from June 2007 but in Asia it was 23 per cent, 66 per cent in the Middle East and Africa, in Latin America it was 33 per cent, and in Europe it was 35 per cent.

The fastest-growing site was Facebook, with a 153 per cent increase in unique visitors. Hi5, a San Francisco-founded website with a strong presence in Latin America, grew almost 100 per cent. Friendster, another US social network, showed a growth of 50 per cent. Google’s Orkut grew at 41 per cent, AOL’s Bebo grew at 32 per cent and Skyrock grew at 19 per cent.

News Corp’s MySpace is still considered to be the biggest social network in the US but is not doing too good internationally. Facebook’s strategy for internationalisation included leaving the single website as it is but allowed members to translate it into local languages. On the other hand, MySpace launched many local versions.
