A social networking website aimed at young gypsy travellers won the Community Award for the social, meaningful usage of technology.

The SavvyChavvy website, one of eight important projects honoured in the UK’s Catalyst Awards category, which recognise technology used wholly for helping communities. The website helps younger travellers remain in touch by posting blogs and videos about their varied experiences. SavvyChavvy won the Community award for its efforts in helping young gypsy travellers communicate with each other. Chavvy is an old Romany word that stands for ‘youth’.

Also honoured in the community awards were a scheme to help people share cars and a ‘virtual nightclub’ for disabled people. Wheelies, a virtual nightclub hosted in Second Life, received the Revolutionary award. The David and Goliath award was given to Liftshare, an online system that helps those with spare car seats find passengers.

Helen Anderson won a special award for her efforts in bringing broadband to South Witham in Lincolnshire. She swung into action after her community was ignored by large internet suppliers.
