Online profile check for jury duty

October 6, 2008

Quite a few employers have already started implementing the idea of performing a background check on their potential employees by referring to their online profiles on social networking websites. This has had many prospective candidates who are seeking employment think twice before uploading any photographs or personal information that may embarrass them. There are a now more people who are resorting to the process of checking backgrounds – the reason being jury duty.

It has been revealed in an article in the Los Angeles Times that Facebook and MySpace are being used by jury consultants so that they can determine the political preference of the potential jurors along with their social status and financial habits. They can thus determine as to how the person will react to issues that are controversial in nature. As per the article:

The percentage of people who have substantial online profiles is still small, maybe 10 (percent), but it is growing exponentially and opening new avenues of exploration for Web-savvy consultants.

According to analysts, since the content that is posted on the networking websites is controlled by the users themselves, searching their online profiles on these online platforms does not intrude their privacy.
