MySpace chooses the UK as the setting of its new online drama

April 19, 2008

The UK has been chosen as the setting of an online drama commissioned by MySpace keeping in mind its culture and music scene, and if the drama is a success, it will be rolled out worldwide, according to Jamie Kantrowitz, London-based senior vice president (marketing and content) of the social networking site.

He added:

The UK has a true love for the underdog and the online drama plays to its culture & music. If it does well, we’ll take an approach for distributing it internationally. If it’s a format that works, maybe we’ll do local versions.

The new online drama follows the recent deal for showing the first production from the revived Hammer Films, Beyond the Rave, which will air in a series of 20 webisodes (four minutes each), before being released as a DVD.

The deal with ShineReveille will effectively see the firm look to handle international television, DVD & merchandise projects of MySpaceTV.

Kantrowitz stated:

This actually starts to create a dialogue on the future of television. It’s a low-risk investment for the Internet if it clicks. If we wish to turn something from MySpace into a different format, it already comes with an (target) audience.
