Mobile phone subscribers join in the online social networking boom

May 18, 2008

Facebook is one of the most well-known and most visited social networking sites accessed by Britons through their mobile devices. In fact, nearly half of the entire UK mobile phone subscribers are now part of the online social networking boom. Further statistics that confirm the trend are:

  • Nearly 25 per cent of mobile subscribers make use of their mobile devices solely for the purpose of social networking.
  • According to the latest figures, more than 812,000 Britons (1.7 per cent of the total UK mobile phone users) accessed networking sites every month on mobile phones in the first quarter of 2008.

These are the findings of a new survey on social networking done by Nielsen Mobile. Analysing the phenomenon, Kent Ferguson, Client Services Manager at Nielsen Mobile, said mobile could be the next big thing; it is already a global phenomenon when it comes to networking.

Several users now opt to access their social networking accounts, while they are on the move. The flat fee price plans on offer from the leading operators, providing subscribers with unlimited mobile Internet access, is likely to culminate into increased demand for mobile social networking.
