Microsoft’s new online store

December 3, 2008

Microsoft has launched a second online store just ahead of the holiday shopping season. The Microsoft Store is intended to carry the largest and latest selection of its product lines, like Office, Windows, Xbox, and Zune. It will also carry Microsoft hardware.

At present, Microsoft operates its Windows Marketplace e-commerce site. However, with the launch of the Microsoft Store, the Windows Marketplace will shut down as an e-commerce site. Marketplace has plans to change from an e-commerce and referral site to a web page. This page will refer customers to sites such as Windows Vista Compatibility Center, Microsoft Store and similar other sites.

The Microsoft Store is accessible to shoppers in Germany, the UK, and Korea too. Plans are underway to add countries like Japan, Spain, France, The Netherlands and other countries in the near future. Many are surprised about why Microsoft is launching a new website at the time when the world is seeing a recession in the spending power of the public. But Microsoft, it seems, is discounting all such worries.
