Microsoft and Google compete to take charge of the navigational web

May 17, 2008

When online advertising is considered, Google can be said to enjoy an advantage over Microsoft. On the other hand, when it comes to mapping services, it can be concluded that the two firms are almost on a par. In fact, both (Google and Microsoft) are trying to come up with various services that will drive the navigational web.

A huge number of mobile devices, which are internet ready, are ready to be tapped for increased reach and profitability. Once that happens, the dynamics of search engines, which are rather informational, will change. Transactional and navigational queries form a minor percentage as of now.

Google is nearly ready to make its Street View part of the navigational search. More services that will map the ocean are likely to be added. The effort is to make maps more interactive and accessible. Microsoft, not to be left behind, has already assessed how it would be beneficial for users, if real time data is made available to them via a map. The engine, called the Senseweb, provides real-time information on several navigational queries - analysed and instantly sent out to users.
