Loopt Beats Facebook and MySpace on iPhone
November 22, 2008Although Facebook and MySpace have excellent mobile applications, they seem to have ignored placing location or presence applications on the iPhone as well as on other platforms.
Loopt has not made the same mistake. Loopt is one of a number of location-aware social networks on the iPhone. As of now it is the 20th most used free iPhone application. In terms of downloads, it is doing much better than both Facebook and MySpace. While Loopt has landed itself as number 20 on the popularity list, Facebook is lower down at number 25 and Myspace is way down at number 43. This is despite the fact that MySpace and Facebook carry out massive advertisements for their iPhone applications to a massive number of users.
MySpace and Facebook reach out to a user base of more than a million users. Loopt, on the other hand, does not have such a large customer base. In fact, Loopt is number 4 in terms of popularity in the list of iPhone social networks and is placed after Facebook, MySpace and AIM. Loopt does however, have support from Apple, which recently showed a Loopt iPhone advertisement on television. This advertisement contributed largely to Loopt’s success in terms of downloads.

The Loopt success here in America is very exciting. The availability of location aware mobile phones in the USA is only nine months old.
We noticed in an announcement last week that google maps now supports “sending your location” to a friend by email. This spells doom for the seven or so companies like Where Am I, I Am Here, and I-map-U.
We are somewhere between the two paradigms. zhiing is not a social network and it works on every phone using SMS.
keep up the great writing.
