London mayoral candidate looks to leverage the reach of the Internet
April 1, 2008Brian Paddick, the Lib Dem London mayoral candidate, is looking to boost his election campaign by leveraging the reach of the Internet. The idea is to reach out to new audiences employing interactive conversational technologies.
He has recruited Jerome Armstrong, a high profile Web strategist who also happened to work on Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential candidacy bid. An influential and experienced Web analyst, he has been assigned with the task of overhauling Brian Paddick’s web site. Jerome Armstrong is an author of the book ‘Crashing the Gate’ that explored the unveiling of ‘people-powered politics’ and also coined the term ‘netroots’ to depict grassroots activism that flourished on the Internet - a key feature of Dean’s 2004 presidential bid.
“Jerome is an internationally famous Web strategist; we’re thrilled to have him on board,” stated a spokeswoman for Brian Paddick’s campaign. He will be working exclusively on the election campaign, and would focus on appealing to an ‘alternative audience & alternative media’ by building a significant Internet presence.
His first project for the London mayoral candidate was to conceive a Twitter profile to invite queries and comments from the public. Launching the Twitter service, Brian Paddick stated he very much welcomed questions and comments on any topic and he was interested in engaging people not generally interested in elections or politics.
