Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to educate soldiers about risks in the ‘careless civilian use of the Internet’

April 27, 2008

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) would be taking measures to educate its soldiers about the dangers and risks inherent in the ‘careless civilian use of the Internet’.

The Israel Air Force has just recently asked all servicemen under their command serving in sensitive units to remove any photographs that they may have uploaded to Facebook, a report in the Haaretz newspaper revealed. These rules do not apply to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) members.

In a related development, Israel has sentenced one of its soldiers to 19 days in jail after it was found that he uploaded a photograph, snapped on his military base, to the social networking site, Facebook. The Israeli military refused to comment on the nature of the image uploaded, but stated the soldier was part of an elite intelligence unit. According to local media, it is the first such incident. The case follows regular reports about the potential security hazard of soldiers posting photographs on the Web. Earlier this year, the defence ministry launched an inquiry for checking the potential security risk in the social networking groups that were dedicated to life in the Israeli military.
