I.B.M. Bluehouse for easier online collaboration

October 8, 2008

There is an arms race of sorts that is taking place amongst some of the globe’s largest technology firms as they all scamper to take control of the next wave of enhanced office software. Google, I.B.M., Microsoft, Cisco Systems and others are selling various applications under the ‘unified communications and collaboration’ banner.

Their various updated packages are replacing yesteryear’s e-mail/ contact software with suites which include Web conferencing, e-mail, thriving online teamwork areas, instant messaging as well as spots to share all kinds of office files.

There is a lot of talk going on about binary baubles, such as widgets and mash-ups that make life easier or perhaps disrupt already overwhelmed workforces. However, the basic idea backing the new technology is quite a simple one.

This is E-Mail Plus. Here the software that you use every day goes a bit farther than it used to. I.B.M. is among the latest tech giants to showcase something new in this domain. This week it is all set to introduce a test version of their new online collaboration software suite termed Project Bluehouse. In fact, the software is quite similar to what Cisco, Google, Microsoft and others offer in various different forms.
