Google to develop Google Translate for mobile phones

Google has recently revealed ambitious plans for the future of mobile technology. The company want to develop a form of their online Google Translate service for use on mobile phones, with the ultimate goal of providing speech-to-speech translation.

Google Translate, as the name would suggest, is an online translator which converts text or even whole web pages into a large number of different languages.

The head of translation services at Google, Franz Och, has explained that the revolutionary idea is certainly possible, and that the internet corporation is confident the technology will be functioning in a few years’ time.

Due to significant advances in machine translation and voice recognition technology, a version of Google Translate for mobile phones does seem to be within the realms of possibility. However, it is not clear at present just how this new technology will function; whether it will be used to translate entire phone conversations in real-time or whether the user will only be able to translate one short phrase at a time.

Despite the fact that most tools and information services are accessed online these days - especially with the advent of smartphones - it is likely that a mobile version of Google Translate will still be a handy tool for users on the go.
