Google hopes to work with IBM to penetrate desktop applications market

May 15, 2008

It seems that Google, the search giant, wants to strike a deal with International Businesses Machines Corp., popularly known as IBM. The search engine giant hopes that IBM will help in selling their desktop applications to large businesses.

Speaking at a gathering of IBM’s key partners, Google CEO Eric Schmidt revealed that working with IBM would be playing a very important role in getting Google’s desktop applications available to more business customers.

This is not the first time that Google and IBM might join hands. Their deal last year made available ‘cloud computing’ to college faculty students. It is quite possible that the two firms may work together on the new project. After Google’s revelation that it is keen on reaching more business customers, additional attention is being paid to the company’s next strategic move in the desktop application market.

Google is looking to expand the revenue base, which largely flows from advertising as of now. Desktop applications are among the lucrative territories predominantly ruled by Microsoft. Stepping in here is one of the new avenues for Google to generate additional revenue streams.
