Google aspires to be an online search market leader in China in five years

April 16, 2008

Google is surely the undisputed leader of the online search market just about everywhere across the globe, except probably China and Russia. In the former, the search engine giant has managed to surge ahead of Yahoo! China and a few other competitors, but is still lagging behind Baidu. Though finding its road ahead in China rather tedious and tough, Google is not going to sit back and watch quietly. The tough market conditions have not thwarted Google’s ambitious roadmap there. On the contrary, Google is keen on dominating the China market.

At a recent conference in Boao, China, Kai-Fu Lee, the president of Google China, gave enough hints of their strategy. “Certainly, we would wish to aspire to be a market leader (in China) in five years,” Mr. Lee stated on the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia.

Google accounted for 26 per cent of China’s Internet-search revenue in the fourth quarter, which was up from 17 per cent a year earlier, according to figures provided by Analysis International, the Beijing based research firm. Market leader Baidu.com’s share increased to 60 per cent from 58 per cent.
