As part of redesign and service improvements for 2010, Facebook is adding yet more changes to their social networking website. The company’s latest plans involve replacing their basic mailing system with a full-featured email service, one which is expected to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Hotmail, Yahoo! and Gmail.
If you are a Facebook user, your new email account will be linked to your profile name (‘name’@facebook.com), and as it will support IMAP and POP, you will be able to access your email account from a smartphone application.
Changes to the Facebook photo uploader
After recognising that users were increasingly dissatisfied with their photo uploader, Facebook are expected to make changes in this area as well.
In an attempt to make the photo uploader more efficient and easy to use, the Facebook site will require users to install a browser plug-in. Whilst this step is not necessary on the current Java system, it will mean that users will be able to upload images faster and more conveniently, and will also allow them to leave photos to upload. In order to use the new photo loader, Facebook account holders will be required to opt in on the prototype page.
