British Sky Broadcasting to Launch Online TV

November 20, 2008

Popular subscription service British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) recently declared that it would be launching an online TV service. The company aims to make full use of its Sky Player Facility. It is also the first time that the company is giving users the option of seeing its channels through the Internet.

The Sky Player was initially launched only for Sky customers but very soon it will be made available to Sky as well as non-Sky customers. To use the service, customers will have to register online and install the software on the PC. This will permit them to see live channels provided by Sky and catch up on any programs that they miss. In order to use this service, you don’t need to be a user of Sky Broadband or Sky TV.

Thus far, the channels expected to be available via the subscription service include the Sky Sports range. However, it is not yet confirmed whether Sky 1 or any of the movie channels would be offered in the subscription package. The date of the official launch is not yet decided on. It may be released in the early part of 2009.

The launch of the online service could not have come at a better time. The popularity of such offerings is rising constantly among customers. They use wide desk-bound monitors to compact smartphones thanks to the improvements in broadband technology. BSkyB is targeting 10 million subscribers by 2010. The proposed new online service may come in handy to reach this target and attract new customers to its expanding business.
