BBC content to be hosted on MySpace
January 24, 2008The commercial arm of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) is set to formally announce its partnership with leading social networking website MySpace that envisages making some of its content to be made available on MySpace.
A part of the News Corporation under Rupert Murdoch, MySpace has gone on record stating that the relationship with BBC is its first-ever global agreement with a prominent broadcaster. The two firms are to share advertising revenue. The BBC has already some success through syndicating content on the YouTube. Its videos there have received over three million views in last one year (to be precise since February 2007).
MySpaceTV is considered the second most popular video website closely following YouTube. The latest deal will offer the BBC an opportunity to broaden the reach of its content, as it strives to reach out to younger consumers online where they socialise. Director of digital media, BBC Worldwide, Simon Danker states: “This (partnership) is in keeping with our strategy of placing our content right at the core of where audiences spend their time & watch videos online.”
The partnership is important for the local-language versions of MySpaceTV across the globe since its earlier collaborations with TV networks have been limited to certain markets whereas the BBC content will be made available globally on regional sites of MySpace.
