Alexa Web Search to be Closed by Amazon

December 3, 2008

Amazon is making use of the Thanksgiving holiday to make a significant announcement. They will be getting rid of Alexa Web Search, an internet service that is part of Amazon. Alexa Web Search has already stopped being available for use. The existing users have been given a deadline of January 26, 2009 to find a new alternative.

As per an email sent by Amazon to creators, the cause of this closure is low usage volumes. Alexa Web Search had to combat stiff competition from the likes of Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. As per the official Alexa Web Search website, Amazon has stated that Alexa Web Search has now been “deprecated,” which is another way of saying it has gone the way of the dodo.

The following is an excerpt from the email by Amazon to one of its developers:

“The Alexa Web Search service will no longer be available to new customers as of November 26, 2008. Use of the service is low, so we are shifting our priorities to other areas where we can provide better service to AWS customers.

The Alexa Web Search service will continue to be operational for 60 days until January 26, 2009. The Programmable Web website offers a list of web services that provide web search.”
