A new sports website with social networking features

August 29, 2008

Dave Katz, formerly a programming executive with Yahoo, through his new venture SportsFanLive is taking on some major players in the sporting space, such as his former employer itself and leading sports websites like ESPN. He is hoping that a blend of news aggregation and social features will give him a distinct advantage.

Katz’s social sports network, called SportsFanLive, has a strategy of concentrating on customisable content and social networking features, apart from more low-key fantasy games for those users not having the time, ambition or desire to maintain a season-long ‘fantasy football’ team. SportsFanLive users will be able to customise the website around the ‘fantasy football’ teams and popular players they love. Users will receive a stream of tailored news, which are to be aggregated from multiple sources.

Users can share articles with their colleagues or friends via a FanFeed. They can share their sports bar hangouts with help of FanFinder, and opt to wage friendly ‘BuxBets’ over just about any theme they can think of. “Fans sure like to test their wits about anything that they think they know best,” Katz has been quoted as saying.
