3jam looks to fill twitter’s void for global SMS

August 25, 2008

Twitter has stopped the capability that enables sending of SMS messages to users’ mobile devices and this has prompted other companies to jump in to the fray and to fill the void. 3jam is one of them. 3jam is a company that has specialised in Web and SMS communication. Twitter reportedly could no longer afford to support long-distance SMS Twittering any more.

There are currently two players ready to fill the void for the worldwide SMS users that Twitter has left behind. The attempts in this direction are being made by TweetSMS and 3jam. But the latter, as of now, seems to be focussed only on direct messaging. 3jam users phones will receive Twitter direct messages via the service. Also, people in Australia, Germany and Sweden will be provided with local Twitter posting numbers.

It is not a free service and the rates are going to vary for different countries. These rates can be checked on 3jam website. They claim that because of their previous experience, scaling the mobile Twitter’s experience will not pose a problem for them. It should not cost them the same money it would have cost Twitter. To lower the costs even further, 3jam has made carrier arrangements globally.
