‘Google Gears’ launched for mobile users

March 5, 2008

The world’s leading search engine provider Google has come up with yet another feature for mobile users, under the brand name Google Gears. The service has three main features. Firstly, it incorporates a local server to cache and serve application resources, without any need to contact a server. Secondly, it provides a database that stores and allows access to data from within the browser, and lastly, it creates a worker thread pool, making web applications more active. This service will initially be available for IE on windows mobile 5 and 6 and will eventually be available for upgraded versions.

To start with, partners such as Buxfer and Zoho would introduce applications that could run on Pocket Internet Explorer. For instance, Zoho Writer, a web office suite, would now be available for windows mobile 6 and would work even in offline mode. Google also intends to come up with a Gears version of Google docs in addition to Gmail, Google calendar and Google Reader, in the near future. Besides these services, the company also announced the release of the Google Mashup Editor, which is an experimental online code editor for building mashups using a simple markup language. It is intended for developers who are familiar with HTML and JavaScript.
