What should you write about?

If you’ve embraced the notion that ‘content is king’ and decided to add a blog or a news section to your website, you now have the problem of deciding what to write about.

For most businesses, the temptation is to write about how wonderful you are. You’ve got free rein to say what you want, so why wouldn’t you try and paint your company in the best light possible? The problem is that your blog doesn’t yet have a readership. You can say what you like, but the chances are that no-one will stick around to read articles which are basically just you talking yourself up.

You’re competing with all the other websites out there and you have to offer your visitors something. Self promotion comes across as spammy. It won’t earn you any incoming links and you won’t receive the visitors that you want.

By far the best approach is to write about your industry. If you can provide regular, useful information about the area in which you do business, visitors arriving from search engines will be the kind of visitors that you want.

Equally, if you provide content that is valuable and informative, people will link to it and your site can only benefit from incoming links.
