Time Warner acquire Bebo - March 13, 2008

Time Warner have bought the social networking site Bebo for 417 million pounds, who are the third most popular social networking site in America after Myspace and Facebook. Bebo is thought to have around 40 million registered members worldwide. Compared with previous acquisitions that have taken place of this nature, News Corp buying Myspace in 2005 for $580 m and Microsoft getting a tiny slice (1.6%) of Facebook in 2007, it could be perceived as a relative bargain for AOL.

However, some have argued that the social networking phenomena may be reaching stagnation, certainly saturation as people are spending less and less time accessing these sites, either due to lack of interest or restrictions made by employers. Only time will tell whether this is a strategically successful move from Time Warner.

  1. Perhaps they will be able to cross promote Bebo with their huge cable TV presence and make an attempt to integrate these two media.
