Time to Place more Importance on Optimising for Bing

“We Bing and we Bing and we Bing. Bing! Bing! Bing!”
Steve Ballmer (CEO, Microsoft) – at CES 2010

In my opinion, when optimising their site, most people only concentrate on Google for a variety of reasons, such as:

  1. Largest market share
  2. Optimising for Google generally gets you good rankings in the other search engines
  3. Bing? Never heard of it!

So, why is it now more important than ever to start to gain good rankings in Microsoft’s most successful attempt at search; Bing?

Bing

You may have heard of Microsoft’s recent announcement – The Windows Phone 7 Series (which is their new mobile OS to replace Windows Mobile). It has captured the minds of most people and has created a lot of excitement. This, inevitably, is going to lead to millions of people purchasing the new Windows 7 phones.

“OK, so what does this have to do with Bing?”

Every Windows 7 Series phone will have a search button that will link to Bing and use its decision engine for all the searches, both local to the phone and on the web.

You may have also heard of the following:

    1. Facebook search will soon be powered by Bing
    2. Apple are also considering ditching Google and making Bing the default search engine on the iPhone (and this probably means the iPad too).
    3. Facebook is now the second most popular site in the US

Now putting together all of the 4 points above… Yes, it seems to me that Bing is going to gain a lot of the market share for search in the coming few years.

      Bonus:

      Windows Live

Windows Live profiles and updates will also show on the new Windows Phone 7 Series. So, from an SMO viewpoint, Windows Live will become a big player in the industry.
