Some Stumble Statistics

This week I thought it might be a good idea to have a look at some user statistics on the popular social networking site StumbleUpon. Creating a small script to parse user profile pages I managed to get a sample set of 6609 users, and for each user I found their age, gender, location, likes, videos, photos, fans and reviews. So with all of this data in hand I looked at some statistics.

Top 5 Ages

Here are the top 5 ages from all of the users looked at.

Age Percentage
0 13.47%
27 4.10%
25 4.07%
24 3.98%
23 3.62%

It seems like most of the users looked at either hide their age or haven’t entered it into the system yet. There is a tick box available in the user preferences section that allows StumbleUpon users to hide their date of birth (if it has been entered) from other StumbleUpon users. After the first value most of the users on StumbleUpon appear to be in their twenties.

Top 5 Locations

Here are the top 5 locations pulled out of users information.

Location Percentage
England UK 7.45%
California USA 7.43%
New York USA 3.93%
Texas USA 2.89%
Florida USA 2.63%

So StumbleUpon seems to be quite popular in England UK with 7.45% of the sample set entering this as their location. This is closely followed by California USA, which is actually where StumbleUpon is based. I wonder if that is just a coincidence?

Male to Female Percentage

One of the things I wonder about is the amount of people of different genders on the system.

Gender Percentage
Male 57.13%
Female 42.87%

I assumed that there where more females on the system than males. This is because a quick look at the people online now page always seems to have pictures of females on it. However, there is a larger percentage of males on the system, which suggests that many of the males on the system are using pictures of females.

Averages

To finish I thought I would look at some average scores for different statistics.

Average number of likes: 1897.13.

Average number of reviews: 34.19.

Average number of fans: 126.03.

These figures closely match my own StumbleUpon account details, which means that I am quite an average StumbleUpon user. However, looking at a special pages created for the top stumblers shows that I have a long way to go if I want to get onto that page.

The problem with these statistics is that they doesn’t represent all of the data from all of the users on the system. It is only a small snapshot of the 3 million users, but it would be interesting to see what the statistics are for all of the users on the system.
