Site down time can affect your SEO work

August 28, 2008

It will not be good for your website’s SEO if Google lists your website as unavailable. This could happen if the Googlebot tries to access your website when your website is down due to some reason. If your website is down, then it may disappear from the Google index until it can be crawled by Google again. Down time could therefore cost you your ranking positions for your desired search terms. Even a short down time can affect your SEO efforts. In this case, an application for re-inclusion is not required as the Googlebot will keep re-checking it automatically.

As mentioned above, down time does affect your SEO. Here are a few points which can combat server downtime and its ill effects.

? Put an uptime monitor on your website and service provider. There are a few companies which monitor your website and servers and will inform you immiediately if anything is wrong.

? If your website goes down contact your host company immediately.

? Make sure that your domain name registration is up to date. It is better to purchase them for a longer period of time and you should respond to an expiry notification as soon as possible to avoid missing the deadline by mistake.

? Google webmaster tools are helpful to see the crawl errors for any page.

The point to remember is that even if your website goes down for just a short period of time it could cause you a great loss in terms of your SEO work.
