SEO Takes Time, Not Just Effort

May 25, 2007

One of the things that happens quite often is that we get clients who sign up and then expect instant results. This is not possible. Anyone who promises that they will get you to the top of the SERPs in a couple of weeks is lying to you in some way or another. Either:

  • You have a very strong site and little to no work will be needed to get the site ranking.
  • They are talking about PPC or sponsored links.
  • They are talking about search engines that have little to no relevance (ie not one of the big 3)
  • They don’t know what they are doing.

With almost every client I talk to, I have to explain how there is no instant fix to their site, and that all the work that is done will take time, both to implement (i.e. link building), and to register with the search engines and get a decent page saturation. They get a brief that gives them estimates on how long we think it will take to get there for the keywords we are concentrating on, yet they still ask us all the time why their site aren’t ranking highly yet. I can understand where they are coming from, but if you are wanting to rank in a competitive market, you need to be willing to spend time as well as money on the project.

No mater how much money you throw at an SEO campaign, you will not be able to buy yourself to the top of the SERPs immediately. People need to understand that SEO takes time. If you want instant results go conduct a PPC campaign, but realise that you will always be paying for your traffic, rather than getting it for free. Free traffic or paid traffic? Which is better? I will leave you to answer that question.

On a totally different note, I recently read a news post at the www.theinternetgroup.com, who are one of our official partners, saying that according to a recent survey they carried out, people under the age of 35 spent on average an hour a day conducting personal browsing while at work. On behalf of the entire SEO team, I would like to assure our managers, that a). we didn’t take part in the survey, and b). if we had we would have obviously driven the average down a lot.
