Rise of vertical search

May 31, 2007

Wazap, the most popular gaming vertical search engine in German and Japan, has succeeded spreading itself in the United States and China. According to the data from Techcrunch, its traffic on the U.S site was 160,000 last month and its alexa rank was 1435.

Wazap has raised $11.9 million in total of funding led by Partech International, with participation from Wellington Partners. $4 million for the first part and $7.9 million for second.

These specialized search applications can help you find more detailed information in games through the keywords. You can find everything about games here, including news, articles, downloadings, etc. The best thing is that when you check over tips and tricks about how to play games, you might get a visual help. For example, a video clip demonstrates how a gamer is able to slay a particular monster.

The success of Wazap shows us that vertical search engines are getting mature and ready for prime time, they may end up threatening Google. The vertical search engines aim to provide more accurate information in specialized fields, not just in games, but also in local info, health, music, etc. They categorise sites and present information in different and intelligent ways with which generic search cannot compete.
