Link Building vs Link Farming

August 27, 2008

We always talk about new and better ways of performing SEO on your site but we normally forget to remind you how not to do SEO. One of the big no nos of SEO is link farming. This is similar to link building although the end result can be very different.

Link building is where sites link to yours which in turn acts as a vote for your site from theirs; this is usually one of best ways to naturally push your site in search engines. But many web developers have tried to abuse this system and the outcome has resulted in what we call link farming.

Link Farming is slightly different, where link building was swapping links with related sites link farming is where you exchange links with totally unrelated sites. Link farming in its extreme instances can mean your links won’t add a vote to your site but could even lead to a ban for your site from Google’s index.

You can avoid being caught for link farming in a few different ways.

  • Avoid linking to sites unrelated to yours
  • Try to avoid sites linking to you who have no relevance to your topic
  • Avoid linking to multiple sites that might be on the same web host. You can find out who shares your host via services like http://www.myipneighbors.com/.
