Keyword Rich Domains and SEO

When you are performing SEO there are over 200 factors which are taken into consideration when the Google algorithm ranks you in the search engines. Today, I am going to explain why a good domain can be a big influence when trying to rank for a keyword in Google.

There has always been documentation about including a keyword in your domain, and how it can really help when trying to get placed higher up in the ranking.

I am going to use examples of those which do really well with, and without, keyword rich domains. I am going to start with a domain that does not use a keyword rich domain: Just Search.

google11

As you can see, our website has a very high position without including SEO in the domain; this is one of the best examples of a website not placing a keyword in the domain.

A good example of a domain that is keyword rich and achieves very good ranking from this is:

google12

When you look at buying a domain, although you do not necessarily need to have the keyword in the domain it is better to have the keyword in there if you are trying to rank in a very competitive industry.

I always recommend that, if you are buying a new domain, you should always think about how you can fit your keyword into the domain. It can make the difference between first and second page listings.

  1. If I were you I would recommend people getting catchy, brandable domain names which can be remembered much easier than keyword stuffed domain names.

Think of your visitors first, there are many more factors that have more weight than keywords in your domain and I would focus on those.

So in short, don’t consider your domain name part of the SEO process – think about your visitors instead.

  2. Good examples. We have a top 3 placement in Google for the term “European Domain”, just because our company name is European Domain Centre, as we did not do any SEO for a long time. If you are considering a company name, then it is not a bad idea to include the main keyword of your industry.
