Is Pagerank Dead?

So is pagerank dead? What I basically mean is it’s been a long time since Google did a pagerank export, I think the longest I’ve ever experienced, SEO’s are getting edgy.

For many of the web community pagerank is a mighty tool, regardless of your rankings it can allow people to sell, exchange advertising and links across their sites and has been a growing industry, however we have not had an update since February this year which is 8 months with out a change, has Google decided to stop the export?

Well initial thoughts are “no”, if they did would they not remove the function from their toolbar? and recently we have seen some major sites such as statcounter drop from a mighty pagerank 10 to a 6, however this appears to be a penalisation
although stats counter still appears top 10 for “website counter” so the true purpose of this drop in pagerank is yet to be seen.

Is Google going to be stringent with its rankings, there are numerous methods these days where people can generate thousand if not millions of links and quickly, is Google trying to clamp down?

So what’s your opinion is Google going to kill Pagerank? or at least the visual view to the web community, the impact this will have on a number of businesses would be tremendous and would effect thousands of people, although most SEO’s aren’t really bothered what the pagerank of a site is, it still can have an immense value.

  1. Pagerank is dead. Period.

Pagerank is more dead than a rotting corpse, more dead than any teenager in Friday the 13th and more dead than those zombies in Resident Evil.

Does Toolbar Pagerank decide your search engine rankings? If this was true, then Engadget, Forbes would have seen at least 20-30% traffic drop by now. None of the sites which have their PR decreased have reported their rankings being dropped.

Will Google devaluate the link passing ability of websites with lower pagerank? Again if this happens then it will be Google itself who is going to suffer in the long run, because we all know Google’s alogorithm is solely dependent on backlinks. And punishing authority or strong sites, means gaming its own algorithm which I doubt Google will do.

And third for readers. How is this Pagerank important? Engadget has a Pagerank of 5 and Gizmodo has a Pagerank of 7 or 8 (Sorry I don`t have Toolbar installed). Does this means for a reader Gizmodo is way ahead of Engadget. I am sure this is something even the Gizmodo editors won`t agree to.

So the Pagerank is rendered useless for all three; webmasters, advertisers and readers. I would suggest people who still follow pagerank to please see the right picture, and move on.

  2. As with all news in Search, I wrote the article Saturday morning and didn’t post it until Sunday afternoon, of course whilst I was looking after my son and having some family time Google decided to carry out a pagerank export, the General out put shows many sites reducing in pagerank (Even our own) but like the comment above there has been no drop in our rankings so nothing really to worry about, (Also our main competitors have all dropped some pagerank as well so there is at least some uniformity across the board. Some sites have had a rise in pagerank, but it does look like pagerank is now more difficult to get higher.
