Google Adwords Matchtypes Tutorial
September 5, 2007Below is a quick tutorial on how to implement match types in Google Adwords.
There are several different match types that you can apply to your keywords in Google; these are “broad”, “phrase” and “exact”. In addition to these you can have negative “broad, “phrase” and “exact”. Lets assume your keyword is “used car” if you set this to broad match then your ad will appear when the terms “used” and “car” are queried together or on their own in any order. Set the keyword to phrase match and your ad will appear but only when the terms are queried together in the same order, such as “used Ford car”. Finally if you were to set the keyword to exact match, the keyword would only appear when it is queried exactly as it appears, for example “used car” only.
When uploading keywords in Google, simply add the following parameters to the keywords
” ” - For phrase match
[ ] - For exact match
- No punctuation for broad match
For negative matching use the -(minus) symbol and for variations use the “-” sign with whichever match type you wish to combine it with - so for negative exact you would type, for example, -[stolen].
There is no need to set a bid so you can use the “quick add” button or if your savvy enough to use Google Adwords Editor, you can simply highlight the keyword (s) and choose the match type from a menu bar at the bottom. Setting match types can vastly boost your click through rate and Google Quality score.
