Google Anchor Text Algorithm Change
August 29, 2008A recent post by Patrick Altoft reported on speculation that Google has reduced the emphasis it pays on the anchor text tag for rankings purposes, as spamming of the anchor text is a common black hat SEO technique employed by unethical amateurs, which can already in the worst case scenario almost certainly get your website banned, filtered or even penalised.
Googles aim is to show the most relevant and trusted websites, however there is a contradiction as anchor text has no relation to trust for most queries, and some people consider this to be the “biggest flaw” in Google algorithm, The argument being natural links to commercial sites usually appear in the form of the websites domain name “http://www.justsearch.co.uk” rather than “SEO Specialist” in the anchor text, in conclusion the general consensus is that this is a good direction for the algorithm to be headed.
The report suggests that google are more likely to reduce the value it places in backlinks, and differentiate between a website having 1000 backlinks from one domain using same anchor text, and a website having a few backlinks from the same domain.
