Your Internet marketing campaign can be user targeted using Google Adwords, which provides many methods of controlling your ad placement on the Google network, such as location targeting, site exclusion and distribution preferences. These methods help you refine which users view your adverts, and are a good form of user targeting.
Google has now released another Ad targeting feature into Adwords called “Internet Protocol (IP) address exclusion”, this new feature allows advertiser to specify if they do not want their Ads to show up for specific IP address, or IP address ranges.
So why is this useful I hear you say?
The main reason to use the feature as Google is well aware is to combat click fraud. For example a competitor may be clicking on your ads to try and reduce your ROI (Return on Investment), you can now block their IP address and they won’t even see your Ads. This means you won’t be paying for clicks which are not going to lead to a conversion. However many people do use dynamic IP addresses, so this can be a bit difficult to keep on top of.
It is a good idea to block your own IP address if you often search your own keywords. This may often mean far fewer impressions from ads viewed by yourself, and therefore a higher CTR (Click through rate)
Adwords will allow you to exclude up to 20 IP addresses, or range of addresses per campaign. This new feature can be reach by going to tools and then click on IP exclusion, and selecting the required campaign. Take care to choose your IP address list carefully, as all Ads within the given campaign will be prevented from showing to users. You don’t want to accidentally block potential customers.
