Deep linking in SEO

"Deep linking" is a term used in search engine optimisation. Essentially it means linking a new page to an older page that has been archived.

A good example of deep linking would be linking a new article to an older archived article. The best way to achieve this is to link to an older article with a related keyword. This is an important SEO strategy as it can help more of your sites pages get indexed in the search engines and ranked for related search terms.

This is also useful from a user's point of view as the linked article is related. It also provides them with access to content on your site they may not have read before.

Without deep linking you older archived content will have less authority. Blogs tend to suffer from this issue more as older articles might get pushed down onto page 2 of the archives. This may result in the search engines indexing the article at the page2 URL, rather than at the main article URL.

To help resolve this issue link articles together where possible, although only do this when this is relevant. You will find that most of your articles inter-connect, making the linking appear natural.
