Content Writing – Quantity vs Quality

As many webmasters and SEOs know, when it comes to the web, content is king. It is what is indexed by search engines and is the most important aspect in deciding a web page’s relevancy, and to an extent, its rankings in search results. It is also what visitors judge your website on, deciding whether or not they return to your website.

So which is more important – having lots and lots of keyword rich content, or a few pages of high quality well written content? Lots of text over lots of pages increases the chances of performing in search engines for long tail keyword searches meaning a good stream of traffic. Whereas less (better written) content will be more likely to keep the reader’s eye, increasing the chances of them returning.

It can depend on the industry or market being targeted, but generally it is the latter strategy that is profitable in the long term. Repeat visitors creates a strong user base, ensuring a steady, stable stream of long term traffic. It also increases the chances of your website being recommended through links, emails, etc., further increasing traffic and SERPs. If you were to create lots of low quality but keyword rich content you might perform well in search engines, but it’s unlikely visitors will find your content useful and will quickly click the ‘back’ button.
