Building Backlinks

May 16, 2008

Backlinks are a very important aspect of off page optimisation. They are incoming links to a website or a web page. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website. How to get backlinks and the quality of backlinks are crucial in SEO success. On page optimisation is easier than off page optimisation as everything is up to you to do and decide. But for backlinks or off page optimisation you have to rely on others to work for your success.

Backlinks are part of Google’s PageRank calculation and the idea behind this is that if a page is good then people will start linking to it. It’s different in practice as you cannot rely on the fact that if your content is good , people will link to you. Although you will get links on the basis of your good on-page optimisation, but what you will get could be less then what you actually need to promote your website. You do need to work to get additional quality links even if you are getting enough links from the natural way. The following are some ways to get backlinks.

  • Getting listed in directories like Yahoo! and DMOZ is beneficial. It not only helps you to get quality backlinks but is also helpful to be easily noticed by the search engines.
  • Posting in forums and blogs is also a way to get quality backlinks. Another advantage of forums and blogs is that you get quality backlinks with the anchor text you want. However forums or blogs have some drawbacks like your link or post can be edited or deleted by the site administrator and they might limit search engines from indexing their forum etc.
  • Another similar way to get backlinks is through a content exchange or affiliate program. An example of content exchange is the exchange of RSS feeds with an interested site.
  • News announcements and press releases are other approaches to get backlinks. A professionally written press release can bring you many visitors. But you should only use this option if there is something newsworthy.
