Google have released a new tool that allows us to see what people can see on our websites depending on the size and resolution of their screen. For web developers, this is a very handy tool to see where to place the most important elements of a website. For example, if you were selling something on your website, you would usually have some sort of call-to-action on your homepage. Using this tool you could ensure that most, if not all, of your potential users would see this call to action without having to scroll.

With the combination of goal tracking in Google Analytics and this tool, you could quite easily find out where is best to place the most important elements on your website. If your website is image or content heavy, then you are unlikely to have either of these on the left hand side of the website. Left hand navigation menus are pretty standard across websites these days, and as you can see, if implemented here it would be seen by every user, providing it didn’t stretch down too far.
One thing that seems important from this tool is that anything important on your site should be as far to the top-left corner as possible, within reason. Anything further down the page than 550 pixels means you are cutting out a good chunk of people who are able to instantly see your content without scrolling. This tool could become very useful for a lot of people, and in terms of SEM (Search Engine Marketing), it gives a great insight into the percentages of people using smaller browser sizes.

nice bit tip! nice to look at once and think about the percentages! it looks more like a scan of badly put together drawing. but does the job!
