The past Years SEO News - BMW banned by Google

December 27, 2006

Taking a look at the past year it is useful to remember the incident when Google blocked BMW’s German website for trying to manipulate SEO results.

Google took action after it found the German firm was using spam optimization techniques to fool the engines. BMW deny the fact it deliberately attempted to fool users into visiting their site, but Matt Cutts was determined to prove otherwise.

According to Cutts BMW were using predominant search terms such as ‘new cars’ and ‘used cars’ all over their home page.

If one thing was learnt in the past year was that Violating Google’s webmaster guidelines is not a good idea, especially when large companies such as BMW are not given the leeway to attempt these black hat techniques.

Google needed to show people they are not messing about and acts like this will not be tolerated, it will inevitably ban you from its listings, no matter how good and untraceable you believe the tacktics to be. Its updates are getting better and better and aiming more and more toward removing spam and dirty techniques altogether.
