How real time search could affect SEO

Google have now started to roll out real time search. Posts from social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook will now appear in the SERPs for certain brand and product related keywords. This big change from Google will create lots of implications for search engine optimisation professionals and brand management.  Below I have provided a few of my thoughts on this topic:

  • Brand management – In addition to traditional SEO, large companies will have to place more emphasis on brand management. Constant reputation monitoring will be required to ensure that bad comments about a particular brand are responded to quickly and accurately.
  • Mobile communication – With the rise in mobile internet communication, including smart phones and iphones, users will be able to review a product or brand instantly. This review might then appear in the search results for a particular brand or product name.  This may cause even large brands to struggle to protect their brand at all times.
  • Traditional SEO – This move from Google means that there will be a large space on the first page of Google which cannot be controlled with traditional SEO methods. As SEO professionals, we will need to discover the ranking algorithm Google uses to rank real time search data.

On a positive note, the move should mean that smaller brands will be able to rank well for a competitive keyword if they have an active social profile

It will be interesting to see how other SEO companies and large brands react to this change from Google. Watch this space

Response to Recent Media Speculation

In light of recent discussions on Google Webmaster Forums and news articles being published on the internet we have deemed it necessary to respond to the claims made by Mike Edwards the Managing Director of DIYDoctor.org.uk on Google’s Webmaster Forums.
On the 8th of July 2009 Mr. Edwards approached Just Search after his website had seen a sudden drop in rankings for a generic keyword. He spoke to one of our SEO consultants who sent the problem to the SEO Department for a review.

The thorough analysis unearthed a range of SEO issues with the site, none of which however were deemed significant enough to have caused the sudden drop in rankings the client had discovered for their main keyword ‘DIY’. The sales consultant then provided the client with a standard report cost, to help improve the overall optimisation of the website.

A member of the SEO team believed the ranking issue with the main keyword could be the possible Google brand update which has been receiving lots of attention from the SEO community recently.

To gain other opinions on this theory our SEO programmer then posted a thread on Google Webmaster Forums, knowing that there are 1000’s of people here who may already have had experience with this recent change in Google. Our programmer posted his theory about the site, and went the extra mile to gather other opinions from other professionals.

The costs discussed with Mr Edwards only detailed average costs for a report service, and at no point has Mr. Edwards paid Just Search for any services regarding this. He also has not been handed a proposal from Just Search, nor was he quoted a figure for rectifying his sudden drop in rankings.

Just Search complete thorough analysis for all our potential clients, with a range of different problems with their Internet Marketing campaigns, and have a proven high success rate.
