Adding Content Good for search Engine Optimisation?

February 3, 2008

Well lets clear the air slightly on why you should add content to your website and why this is good for Search engine optimisation. It’s best explained by discussing the different parts of SEO:

On Page Work:
Firstly is the site Search engine friendly i.e. can spiders get through the site and pick up information. Secondly is there information on the site for the spiders to pick up.

Off Page Work
This is the creation of an online linking portfolio or community, this is what will help get the really competitive keywords
and gain high positions within a Search Engine.

OK so if links will dictate the majority of the position why add content? Firstly lets say that we have two sites with basically the same on page work and the same links pointing to them (Just Imagine of course there is a lot more factors) well the site which is updated more regularly will rank higher as Google will place more relevancy on this site than the stagnant site.

The other advantage of content is the abundance of long tail keywords that you can gain visitors from, but I’m talking a lot of traffic think about it you may get 10,000 visitors a month coming through your main keywords but if you add up all your long tail keywords your probably getting a further 20,000 visitors from that alone.

So ways of adding content to your site are as follows;

  • Add an Article Directory
  • News Section
  • Forums
  • Blogs
  • Frequently Asked Questions

So if you can add a page everyday of information each year that 365 extra pages for people to find in the search engines and it shows Google that your site is refreshed daily. Of course their are tactics to gain the best effect but I’ll talk about this another day.
