7 Reasons Wordpress Rules! - May 30th, 2008

In the world of SEO blogs have made a big impact because they can bring so much good to your website. I’m going to give you my top 7 reasons to install a blog today!

  1. The primary reason it would be recommended that a blog is added to a persons website is that it add’s content to that website. If a blog is written to every day then that’s 365 pages of unique content being added a year which is invaluable.
  2. Once you have your content it can encourage long tail search traffic. All websites can optimise of keywords or phrases but nobody optimises for long tail searches (these are more like questions than phrases). Blogs are great at capturing these, and whats more because the page wont be removed it will keep capturing these phrases.
  3. Wordpress is extremely SEO friendly. With the use of the permalink option in the control panel you can make the URL the title of the blog which should always be unique which means it generates unique titles for all your pages. Also with the use of plug-ins like “All In One SEO” then it makes it even better, this also gives you the chance to add descriptions and keywords to each page.
  4. Something that people may not really think about but is a good bonus with wordpress is that it automatically generates a feed for your website, you can use this feed on the homepage, submit it to feed search engines and its generally another method of getting your website out there. With feedburner as well it can give an indication to how many regular readers you have on your site.
  5. If you write a blog and it is popular then people will always leave you comments, this is another good way to see how many readers you have but more importantly it can generate a community feel for the blog, this is good because it can encourage more people to join in and voice their opinion and also it keeps people interested in the site and coming back to check up.
  6. If you don’t like they way wordpress looks then no problem! wordpress is fully modifiable so there should never be a part you don’t like cause if you don’t like any of it then you are free to change it or remove it! this means it can be fully tailored to your website and often you might not be able to tell you are reading a wordpress blog!
  7. The final reason wordpress is king is also down to the community that supports it. If you have a problem or want to request something then wordpress is well supported by forums. Wordpress has that many users that more than likely your problem has already been resolved and a quick read in the forum’s can help you no end!

Optimising websites that are Flash based - May 29th, 2008

There is no doubt that Flash is a great technology to include sound and images on a page and increase the interactivity of web sites. But even after many years, it is still an issue as far as SEO is concerned, as search engines still cannot easily index all of the contents of Flash files.

Search engines cannot read all of the content within Flash files because they are too difficult to index fully.? Spiders cannot index Flash files the same way as they do with html files, instead they can only really index filenames and some text based content within the Flash files.

As a general rule one should keep the use of Flash to a minimum, and definitely avoid Flash menus. However, if you are unfortunate enough to have a site entirely in flash, then there are a couple of steps you should take if you have a flash only site:

  • Add metadata to all Flash files that you use/create.
  • Provide alternative pages that are Flash free but replicate the same information.

Ideally though, you should only have pages on your site that don’t require Flash for the page to work. It is bad from both an SEO perspective and an accessibility one to require Flash to view a web page. As well as this, there can be usability issues due to the fact that Flash does not require the same of structure and layout as standard web pages, which can confuse people.
