How to increase your blog traffic - October 25th, 2007

Getting relevant traffic to your blog is as important as generating great content for it. Since WordPress is a favorite blogging platform for many bloggers, I thought it would be valuable to share some of the most common advice on how to increase the traffic for wordpress blog.

The permalinks structure
It is always better to have your title in the URL rather than some default dynamic urls. For example, http://www.yourblog.co.uk/increase-traffic-in-Oct-07 is always better than http://www.yourblog.co.uk/index.php?id=567. To change your permalinks structure, you need to login to your Wordpress admin panel and click Options -> Permalinks.

Keywords title and content
Using keywords in your post title is important, your titles makes a big difference when your blog post is being ranked for a particular search string. You also need to use keywords throughout your post. Concentrate on the first paragraph then use variations of your main keyword throughout the rest of your post.

Interlinking
One best way to keep visitors interested is to show them other content on your blog that may be related to the post they are currently reading. Link to your previous posts from your new posts whenever you get chance and use your relevant keywords as anchor text.

Incoming links
To participate at Related Forums and Blogs would be a great way to bring quality incoming links. Let people who are interested in your industry can easily find your blog through those large online communities.

Ping Other Sites when updating your Blog
Pinging other sites allows other sites to get updates from your blog much sooner and automatically when you make a new post. To have your blog update other sites when you update it, login to your Wordpress admin area, select Options > Writing and copy and paste the links under “Update Services”.

Microsoft buy into Facebook - October 25th, 2007

Microsoft has purchased a 1.6% stake ($240 million) in the social networking phenomena Facebook. This values Facebook itself at a staggering $15 billion. This is even more incredible due to the fact that Facebook has allegedly not made a profit thus far. This stake will allow Microsoft to be “the exclusive third-party advertising platform partner for Facebook”.

The companies did not comment on how this would impact upon search, will Facebook start popping up more often in Live.com SERP’s? I doubt it, Microsoft will be seeking credibility against the likes of Google when it comes to organic search. That said, has anyone noticed a lot of Youtube videos appearing in Google results of late? This deal makes the $1.65 billion and $580 million takeovers of Youtube and Myspace respectively look like good business.

Mark Zuckerberg has fended off previous attempts to procure facebook at much lower figures, so credit must goto him for holding out this long. With membership predicted to surpass 200 million in the near future, it would be foolish to pass judgement on the final overall value of the network.
