Wordpress 2.1 has been released, and the question is: how can we use it to improve SEO? - January 29th, 2007
With the recent release of Wordpress 2.1, it has been my task to find out what the latest changes and features are, and how they will affect the SEO we perform. After reading through all of the latest change logs and installing several test blogs on our development servers, I have decided that this latest version of Wordpress is definitely a great improvement over previous versions. The main change from a SEO perspective, rather than the standard bugfixes and useability updates, has been the ability to set a static front page, instead of having the latest entries from the blog displayed.
This feature allows you to use the system more like a standard content management system (CMS). It provides a front page that can be updated as and when you require, but it will not be constantly changing whenever you update your blog. However, you can also include a stream of the latest posts on this front page if that is what you desire.
Whilst offering all of these features, it still stays compliant to W3C standards, one thing a lot of content management systems seem to ignore, allowing your site to be cleanly spidered by all of the search bots - one reason Google and all the other search engines like Wordpress blogs. Another really good feature from an SEO perspective is the Permalinks for every entry, these can be arranged to be SEO friendly URLS if you understand the system.
Wordpress also allows you to theme the site, allowing the blog to fit in with the current sites look and feel, providing seamless integration with a company’s image.
