Meta Tags - August 31st, 2006

Meta tags are details which are added to the <head> section of your web pages. Apart from the detail which is inserted between the <title > tags, the information in the head area of your web pages cannot always be seen by any user who is viewing your pages. The other sections in the Meta structure are used for communication that users are not concerned with. Some commonly used Meta tags are as follows. The Meta description tag allows you to add a description of your site in order to influence the description of your page in engines which support that specific tag. But beware this does not happen with every search engine. Some engines will ignore this tag and instead will automatically generate its own description for this page and others could only support it to a degree. The Meta keywords tag allows you to provide additional text for search engines to index along with the information in the body. This allows you to add words which you think may help your web page climb to the top of the search engines

Beware, Meta tags are not a guaranteed way to gain a high page rank in search engines. On and off page optimization are also vital in gaining a high page rank in the search engines.
