Why use CSS? - February 24th, 2006

When it comes to search engine optimisation, you need a clean coded site. Everybody knows that.
One way of reducing the overall code of your web document is to move a substantial amount of it off onto a cascading style sheet (CSS). Use the style sheet to position images so that you no longer have to insert images and the code that goes with it into the HTML script.
Using this technique you can reduce the amount of irrelavant (when it comes to spiders) code as possible. Your natural text density will increase and therefore your keyword density wil increase also.
Stylesheets are a must when it comes to large or dynamically generated sites. Using the stylesheet to specify font size and colour you can effectively change the look of your entire website by altering one document.

Most designers will know all of this as old news, but still I come across recently built websites that do not use stylesheets.

Why are people not moving with the times? (not that CSS is a new technology)
The W3C do not specify the use of CSS to make your site valid, but why not do it anyway? The alteration stage is so much simpler and less time consuming, and remember, when it comes to any form of professional design,

Time is money

Search Engine Optimisation - Canonical URL’s - February 23rd, 2006

A Major issue that we have found with many sites in all the major Search Engines is an issue known as “Canonical URL’s”, so what is it and how does this affect your Search Engine Optimisation?

Below is an Example:

The problem arises that the search engines associate this as to separate websites and if you have two websites with identical content then this can cause a duplicate content issue which is frowned upon by Google. So with out even realising your own site could be detrimental to itself.

This can be seen on a Grand scale by looking at www dot about dot com. The domain with the www is a page rank 9 but the domain name without www is a page rank 8. This can obviously not be a benefit to your site.

So how is this caused?

One reason is from Bad Design or lack of knowledge, some designers have created internal links with in a site to go to http://yourdomain.co.uk/yourpage.html this means that Google will even associate sub folders as separate sites if part of you website point to a folder of the domain without the www’s. The other is that Google itself may have reason to associate them as two different domains.

So how can this be resolved and how long will Google take to resolve the issue?

The issue was raised with our selves after the infamous Jagger update, since then the canonical URL issue has come into light much more, we our selves had this experience as http://justsearching.co.uk had a page rank of 0.

We rectified this by adding a permanent redirect from http://justsearching.co.uk to http://www.justsearching.co.uk after a period of about two months Google then showed the following information for our domain no matter which version we typed in.
